Pocket Gettysburg serves as a comprehensive reference and research tool, providing users with an extensive database dedicated to the monuments of the Gettysburg National Military Park and the broader Adams County area. This app proves invaluable for historians, educators, and enthusiasts alike, whether in the field or reflecting on the events from home.

With a robust catalog of approximately 1,200 monuments, memorials, plaques, historical markers, and wayside markers sourced from the Historical Marker Database (HMdb.org), Pocket Gettysburg delivers a wealth of information. Each entry features:

 <li>Geographical coordinates (latitude and longitude);</li>
 <li>A description of the monument’s physical location, including the nearest road;</li>
 <li>An interactive map indicating the monument's position;</li>
 <li>Multiple photographs from varying angles;</li>
 <li>The full text inscriptions present on each face of the monument;</li>
 <li>A web link for further research and related resources;</li>
 <li>Construction and dedication information when available.</li>
</ul>

The app enhances user experience with several powerful features:

 <li>Users can pan and zoom to focus on specific areas of interest;</li>
 <li>GPS-enabled devices allow users to view their location in relation to nearby monuments;</li>
 <li>The list of monuments can be sorted alphabetically or by proximity;</li>
 <li>Each monument listing includes a thumbnail image;</li>
 <li>Tapping a pin reveals detailed information and additional photographs;</li>
 <li>A search function facilitates quick access to monuments by their full or partial names (e.g., Maryland, Cavalry, 145th New York);</li>
 <li>The map is dynamically updated to reflect monuments that match search parameters;</li>
 <li>Union and Confederate monuments are color-coded (blue for Union, grey for Confederate), with customizable colors;</li>
 <li>In addition to a standard view, users can opt for satellite or hybrid maps to enhance contextual understanding of landmark locations;</li>
 <li>For optimal performance, groups of monuments are clustered into a single dot for streamlined navigation, with expandable views as users zoom in—this feature can be toggled off for faster devices.</li>
 <li>Compatible with iPod touch, iPhone in portrait mode, and iPad in both portrait and landscape modes.</li>

Pocket Gettysburg also delves into military history by offering insights into over 860 military units involved in the battle. Users can explore regimental histories, areas of recruitment, strength and loss figures, successions of command, as well as a navigable "Order of Battle" illustrating hierarchical relationships among military units.

Additionally, the app includes detailed profiles of commanders along with information on over 60,000 individuals connected to the battle. This encompasses everyone buried at the Soldier's National Cemetery and all residents recorded in the 1860 Census for Gettysburg and Cumberland Township.

The databases are interlinked for enhanced research capabilities, allowing users to explore connections such as “Monuments linked to this unit” and “People linked to this monument.”
